The national football team of Iran, known as ''Team Melli'', ranks 1st in Asia and 43rd in the world according to the FIFA World Rankings. Iran is one of the most successful national teams in Asia with three Asian Cup championships (1968, 1972, and 1976). Iran have qualified for the World Cup four times (1978, 1998, 2006, and 2014) but have never advanced past the group stage.
